IUIS-AAI Travel Awards Results

Results of the competition for IUIS-AAI travel awards to attend the AAI Immunology summer courses in the USA.

 

For the Introductory Course in Immunology Awards, we received 51 applications.
We had 25 from Latin America, with 16 from Brazil, 4 from Argentina, 2 from Cuba and one each from Columbia, Uruguay and Chile. From the African continent, we had 19 applicants, 5 from Ghana, 4 from Kenya, 3 from Morocco, one each from Gabon, Ivory Coast, The Gambia, Nigeria, Uganda, South Africa and Egypt. We had 3 from India, 2 from Pakistan, and one each from Mongolia and Iran.
Candidates were evaluated by members of the IUIS Education Committee.

The winner of the IUIS Gender Equality Career Development Committee Award is:
•    Mrs Dorcas Ohui Owusu, MPhil, PhD student, Clinical Research Projects Coordinator, Department of Medicine, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi, Ghana.

The winners of the IUIS Education Committee Awards are:
•    Ms María Paula Caruso, MSc, PhD student, Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas en Retrovirus y SIDA, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
•    Mr Daniel Antwi-Berko, MSc, PhD student, School of Medical Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KCCR-SMS, UPO KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana.
•    Mr Nathan M. Shaviya, MSc, PhD student, Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Kakamega, Kenya.

Congratulations and have a great course in Long Beach, California in July 2016.

For the AAI Advanced Course in Immunology Awards, we received 88 applications. 
By far the biggest number of applicants came from Latin America for a total of 56, with 28 from Brazil, 16 from Argentina, 5 from Columbia, 2 each from Uruguay, Peru and Chile and 1 from Cuba. Next were 19 applicants from Africa: 9 from Kenya, 2 each from Soudan and Ethiopia, and 1 each from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Burkina, Tanzania and Ghana.  Then we had 9 applicants from Asia: 8 from India, and 1 from Malaysia. We also had 4 from Europe, 2 from Italy, 1 from Belgium and 1 from Romania.
It was a hard task for the IUIS Education Committee to determine the more meritorious applicants.

The winner of the IUIS Gender Equality Career Development Committee Award is:
•    Dr Maia Solange Marin, PhD, Postdoctoral fellow of the National Scientific and Technical Research Council, Virology Lab, Animal Production Department, Balcarce Experimental Station, National Institute of Agricultural Technology, Balcarce, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The winners of the IUIS Education Committee Awards are:
•    Dr David Eric Ouedraogo, PhD, Young Researcher at the Institute of Research in Health Sciences, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
•    Mrs Ana Maite Folle, PhD student, Laboratory of Immunology, Faculty of Sciences and Chemistry, Universidad de la Republica, Montevideo, Uruguay.
•    Ms Luísa Mourão Dias Magalhães, MSc, PhD student, Laboratory of Cell-Cell Interactions, Department of Morphology, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
