Immunopharmacology: Challenges, opportunities and research tools

Monday 1st October 2018 at Edinburgh, UK

Visit the Meeting website

The Immunopharmacology: Challenges, opportunities and research tools scientific meeting is designed to give participants the opportunity to hear leading academic and industry experts in immunity, inflammation and infection from around the world present their research. The meeting provides invaluable opportunities for participants to network with both immunologists and pharmacologists from the UK and overseas.

Immunopharmacology is at the therapeutic cutting edge for key industry research areas in both the biotech and big pharma sectors. This meeting will bring together academic and industry experts to address the need for better communication and data exchange in the pharmacology of immunity, inflammation and infection research.

The programme includes sessions led by Professor Luke O’Neill (Trinity College, Dublin) and Professor Alberto Mantovani (Humanitas University, Italy and President, International Union of Immunological Societies). It also features a workshop to officially launch the IUPHAR Guide to IMMUNOPHARMCOLOGY database project.

The meeting should be of interest to all those in academia or industry working in the field of immunity. It particularly aims to assist students and postdoctoral researchers embarking on a career in academic and industrial immunopharmacology, who are encouraged to submit oral and poster presentation abstracts.

Submit an abstract – deadline 13 July

Register to attend – early bird deadline 3 September

Overview

A recent global pharmaceutical R&D review lists the top-three general mechanisms of action as immunostimulant, anticancer immunotherapy and immunosuppressant, covering 1704, 399 and 221 therapeutic agents, respectively (Pharmaprojects® pharma R&D annual review 2016). The increasing dominance of these categories is reflected in growing academic and industrial research in the pharmacology of immunity, inflammation and infection. Data exchange between these three research communities and the pharmacology community is therefore critical to the development of new drugs, and the overall aim of this meeting.

Aims and objectives

  • To bring together academic and industry experts in the fields of immunity, inflammation and infection research, as related to pharmacology, to highlight the challenges in bridging the gap in communication and data exchange between the immunity, inflammation and infection research communities and the pharmacology community, and the need for an easily accessible data flow in both directions.

  • To officially launch the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) Guide to IMMUNOPHARMCOLOGY database project (GtoImmuPdb; http://www.guidetoimmunopharmacology.org/), developed to specifically address the need for data exchange in the pharmacology of immunity, inflammation and infection research. This database is an immunity/inflammation-focused extension of the IUPHAR/BPS Guide to PHARMACOLOGY database (GtoPdb; http://www.guidetopharmacology.org/), with an ‘immunologist-friendly’ web portal to access the data.

  • To assist students and post-docs embarking on a career in academic and industrial immunopharmacology.

Abstract submissions

The organisers encourage abstract submissions from final year undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers working in all areas of biology, chemistry, chemical biology, genetics and drug distribution relevant to drug discovery and from early career scientists working in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry.

A prize will be awarded for the best oral presentation and the best poster presentation given by a young scientist.

Oral presentation abstract submission deadline: Friday 13 July 2018
Poster presentation abstract submission deadline: Friday 13 July 2018
